How To Protect Your Facebook Account From Hackers

 CREATE A STRONG PASSWORD

It is a good thing to avoid including your name, birthdate, pets, or common words in your password. For example, my name is Oluwaseyi, imagine how easy it would be for a hacker to hack my account if my password is Oluwaseyi 123, or if I use my birthday as my password. Even using a combination of your birthday and name won’t be secure enough.

A strong password will be at least 10 characters in length. Also a strong password should contain at least one of each of the following characters: lower-case letters, upper-case letters, numbers, and special characters like @#?!.

Do not use your Facebook password anywhere else. Even of you are having problems mastering many passwords, it’s better you find a place to keep your account information instead of using a password for many accounts.

Do not share your Facebook password with anyone. In fact, don’t share any of your passwords with anyone!

AVOID SAVING PASSWORDS ON PUBLIC DEVICES

Avoid clicking the “YES” button when asked whether to save password or not, especially when you are using a public computer, an example is when using cyber cafes.

So this means you have to read every pop up notifications carefully before clicking a response.

ALWAYS LOG OUT ON OTHER DEVICES

After using Facebook, always log out if you are using a public device or a friend’s device. The only exception is if you are browsing with your own personal device.

Note that just closing a browser is not enough, in fact if a closed browser is opened again, you might find that your account will still be very much active, this is because Facebook will recognize the session as continuous for a while. Therefore if a person comes in just right after you, he should have access to your account.

You have to ensure that you have logged out and that neither your number nor email address is displayed in the authentication tabs. You’ll otherwise find some nasty posts up on your wall if the guy is aiming to destroy you.

 OPT FOR TWO-WAY AUTHENTICATION

This feature sends an authentication message to your phone every time you or a hacker tries to log in to your account. You can use this through third-party software or Facebook’s verification mechanism.

When logging in, you receive a unique code that will enable you to access Facebook in that session only. Once the session has ended, you will need to receive another authentication message to access your account once more.

How to activate two – way authentication on your account

Two-factor authentication gives your account an extra level of security by requesting a security code when you log in from an unknown browser. To set up two-factor authentication, click on the word “Edit” to the right of “two-factor authentication,” then click on “Get Started” to begin the setup wizard.

The most common way to access login codes is through your phone — either by text message or the Facebook app.

If you anticipate that you might need login codes when you do not have your phone nearby, you can get 10 codes ahead of time (which you can print or write down) from Facebook. To do this, open the “two-factor authentication” section, click on “Get codes,” enter your Facebook password, and click “Submit.”

CLEAN UP YOUR BROWSER

It is always advisable to clean up your browser every once in a while.

Most phishing and virus activities are found in porn and torrent sites. If you are a frequent visitor, it is better you always clear your data before someone gains access to your authentication details.

PROTECT YOURSELF FROM SPYWARE AND MALWARE

The hacking problems are not only web-based. A person can hack your browser through malicious software you may have unknowingly installed on your computer.

Some of these software could also spam some pop-up ads onto your screen or browser. You can avoid this by using malware, adware, and spyware removers.
