You're probably aware that some of your habits affect your skin things like whether you wash your face everyday or whether you wear sunscreen for a day at the beach.
But there are also some surprising things you may not have realized are affecting your skin.
You want to treat your skin right so it looks great. But some of the daily routines you may not think about can add up to damage over time.
Keep your complexion on track and know which habits to change.
1. You eat lots of sugar and not many fruits and vegetables.
Some studies have found that diets heavy on sugar can speed up the aging process. That goes for sweet treats like lollipops and ice cream as well as starches in refined carbs like white bread and pasta.
A skin-friendly diet should focus on vegetables, fruits, and whole grains. Research shows that fresh fruits and veggies may help prevent damage that can lead to aging skin.
Produce also has antioxidants that can help repair your skin.
2. Smoking
You probably already know that smoking is terrible for your heart and lungs (among other organs). Smoking is "one of the worst things you can do to prematurely age your skin." Basically, just don't do it.
Nicotine reduces blood flow to your skin, which means it doesn’t get enough oxygen and nutrients. And the chemicals in tobacco damage the collagen and elastin proteins that give your skin structure
A smoker’s skin is thin, dull, more wrinkled, and less able to heal.
3. Dirty pillowcases.
At night your skin gets a chance to rest and shed its dead cells. Those cells build up over time on your pillowcase, leaving behind bacteria and toxins.
In order to keep skin healthy, make sure you change your pillowcase at least once every two weeks.
4. Air Pollution.
Recent studies have shown that chronic high exposure to air pollutants have been associated with premature skin aging and inflammatory or allergic skin conditions such as atopic dermatitis, eczema, psoriasis, and acne.
If you live in an area with a higher concentration of air pollutants, try to limit your exposure and select skincare with antioxidant properties to help fight free radicals.
5. Touching Your Face.
If you have a habit of touching your face or rubbing your eyes, you may want to stop.
Repeatedly, touching your face or resting your chin on your hands can introduce dirt, oils, and bacteria to the skin that can contribute to acne.
As for rubbing your eyes when you're tired, It can break the delicate capillaries under the skin as well as damage the tissues in this area and increase the risk of wrinkle development earlier in life.
I know these habits can be really difficult to break, but if you can, you just may see fewer acne flareups and dark circles.
6. Getting hair products on your face.
You might think it's okay to spritz that stuff everywhere but hairspray and skin are not always friends.
Also, wear a sweatband on your head at the gym to stop loads of product sweating onto your face.
7. Cell Phones.
What with how often we touch our phones, all of the places we put them down, and other people we might let touch them, our personal devices are covered in bacteria.
Using these dirty devices without cleaning them can lead to breakouts especially along the cheek and jawline.
Make sure you clean your phone regularly with antibacterial wipes.
8. You’re too harsh on pimples.
When you’ve got a pimple the size of Mount Vesuvius brewing on your face, you want it gone ASAP. Popping it is not the answer because that can lead to scars and infections.
How about a cream? Benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid are two of the most common and effective treatments.
9. Exfoliating too often.
Over-exfoliating your skin can strip it of its necessary oils it needs to maintain your natural glow. Exfoliate your skin just once a week to keep it healthy.
10. Inadequate Sleep.
It's called "Beauty sleep" for a reason. When you sleep "your body has time to repair and regenerate, and inadequate sleep can contribute to inflammation, which impacts the immediate and long-term appearance of the skin.
11. Wearing Dirty Sunglasses.
Dirty sunglasses can cause bacteria to get into the pores around the bridge of your nose, causing breakouts and irritation. Clean them before wearing, the same goes for regular glasses!
