Ibrahim Ayodeji is one of the most outstanding and prolific music
artistes from Nigeria and the continent of Africa at large. Going by
the stage name "Wizkid", he has numerous hits and Awards under
his belt. Nigeria's entertainment scene is known for breaking
records and setting the pace in the continent of Africa. However,
there is one world record Wizkid has broken , which no other
Nigerian musician has broken yet. Wizkid is the first Nigerian
musician to have his name in the world Guinness book of record.
By the term "Nigerian Musician", we are referring to Nigerian Musicians who started or are currently working with the Nigeria Music Industry. Wizkid technically broke this global record in 2018 when his name was listed in the Guinness World Book of Records. He earned the record for being part of the most streamed song on the Spotify music platform, along with American singer/rapper, Drake . The club banger as we all know is simply titled " One Dance".
Wizkid is basically one of the modern Nigerian Artistes who pioneered the global campaign for Afrobeats through his music. Wizkid is known internationally for his songs with Drake, Beyonce and a host of other Artistes. There is another record Wizkid has broken, which no other Nigerian musician has broken yet. This will be highlighted as you read on.
How "One Dance" Was Made
Regarding the use of her 2008 song "Do You Mind (Crazy Cousinz remix)", UK funky artiste Kyla was first contacted by Drake's production team , as they intended using it in a new dancehall and Afrobeats song with Drake and Nigerian artiste, Wizkid .
One year prior to this, Drake had already met Wizkid through the British grime music artiste Skepta in a bid to work on a remix of Wizkid's single Ojuelegba.
Drake was reportedly a big fan of Kyla's music for so many years and therefore convinced his producer Nineteen85 into sampling "Do You Mind (Crazy Cousinz remix)" as a bridge within their new song. "Do You Mind" was later worked on by South African DJ Maphorisa , who had to slow down the tempo of the Music before the addition of Wizkid's background vocals.
Within just one week, Production of "One Dance" was already completed - of which they were so quick to release it in early April 2016. This was due to the fear of the song being leaked, sighting the fact that Drake's previous song "Controlla" (of which the first version had the vocals of Jamaican dancehall artiste Popcaan ) was leaked onto the internet in March 2016.
Adding to Wizkid's work on "One Dance", Drake also provided his own vocals for the Wizkid track "Come Closer", which was recorded at the same time, but released a year later in March 2017.
However, Drake and his team were not so sure if "One Dance" would get a positive reception upon being released , since it was considered to be a significant shift from his previous works. They eventually decided on it being released jointly with the song titled "Pop Style", which features The Throne (Kanye West and Jay Z). They felt it was pretty much of a conventional rap record and would therefore cushion the criticism, had it been negative.
Release And Commercial Performance
On the 5th of April 2016, "One Dance" was eventually released for digital download . As at April 12th 2016, the single was already being serviced to the US urban and contemporary hit radio. "One Dance" was out for streaming and digital download shortly after the release date for the Views album was announced. This was announced alongside "Pop Style".
